Farmers Insurance Open 2022 Preview

The name Torey Pines will resonate with most golf fans as a spectacular golf course perched along cliff edges on the San Diego coastline. Torey Pines contains two courses – North Course & the South Course, which at 7765 yards is the longest course on the PGA tour currently and was host to the 2020 US Open. The set-up for For the Farmers Insurance Open tournament is that the North course will be played by all 156 players in the field, in either round one or two, with those who have made the cut returning to the longer North course for the final two rounds.

This is a classy but challenging championship course that has created many golfing spectacles like the second hole “almost hole in one” that Tiger woods played where the ball jumped out of the whole after bouncing in or the memorable US open played here in 2020 or Retief Goosen who while in trouble on the 4th hole in 2009 bounced the ball off the big slope next to the green and scored a birdie.

The length of the course will play to the strengths of the longer hitters and the top seven championship contenders for this year are:

  • Jon Rahm - at 7:1 for a win and 2.63:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Xander Schauffele - at 17:1 for a win and 5:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Will Zlatoris - at 29:1 for a win and 8:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Tony Finau - at 26:1 for a win and 7:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Sam Burns - at 23:1 for a win and 6:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Patrick Reed - at 46:1 for a win and 10:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Hideki Matsuyama - at 19:1 for a win and 5.5:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet

Rahm in particular has dominated at Torey Pines after winning the Farmers Insurance Open on his debut here in 2017 and was the first to win on debut since Arnold Palmer in 1957. Rahm also won his first major at Torey Pines in 2020, making history as the first U.S. Open winner from Spain. Rahm has scored a cumulative 51-under at the Farmers Insurance Open since 2017, the best cumulative score by any player in that span by a five stroke margin.

Rahm is my top pick for a win

Other golfers to consider:

  • Scottie Scheffler – Scored a Top-7 at the US open here and good value at 6.5:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Joaquin Niemann (3 cuts made out of 3 starts) - at 6.5:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
  • Christian Bezuidenhout in great form and accurate off the Tee is at 13:1 for a top 5 finish on SunBet
