DP World Tour (European Tour) Preview 2022

Greg Stewart

The European Tour and DP World were both established in 1972 and developed into global enterprises with DP World headquartered in Dubai. DP World became an Official Partner of the European Tour in 2015, and they have now become the Official Title Partner of the revised World Tour from the start of the 2022 season, which kicked off with the Joburg Open in South Africa in November 2021. The tour now boasts total prize money of over $200 million for the first time, with a minimum prize fund of $2 million for all 47 tournaments to be played in 27 different countries.

While current DP World Tour rankings see five South African Players in the top 10, this is a bit skewed as the only tournament played so far is the Joburg Open where the SA players dominated the top tournament positions and this is likely to change as we head into the UAE based tournaments with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic to be played over the next two weeks.  Prize money for each tournament is an incredible $8 million plus 8000 DP World Tour points up for grabs. These are top tour events that draw of the world’s best golfers.

Big Names like Collin Morikawa, who won the 2021 Open Championship, Rory McIlroy and previous tournament champions Lee Westwood (2020), Tyrrell Hatton (2021), and two-time Champion Tommy Fleetwood (2017, 2018) are included in the line-up. Top contenders for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship are McIlroy and Morikawa – both at 8:1 0n Sunbet with a fun bet option of 5:1 for a playoff decider also available for sports betting fans.

The big winning ticket is the season long “Race to Dubai” which ranks players on their performances over the course of the season on a points system that builds up to the DP World Tour Championship at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai in November, where the overall winner is decided. Both Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have been double champions in two consecutive years. This year it will be the 2021 champion Colin Morikawa who will be the player to beat, based on his current form.
