Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur, Saturday 17 August #MCITOT
The English Premier League made a long-awaited comeback for another season on Friday 9 August and the opening weekend was worth the wait and then some. If for some inexplicable reason you weren’t able to get eyes on any of the action here’s a quick numbers lowdown: There were goals, goals and even more goals. In fact, there was a total of 27 goals scored in 10 matches, that’s an average of 2.7 goals scored per match! No less than 15 players earned themselves a yellow card with Everton’s Morgan Schneiderlin receiving a red card.
Last year’s two leading teams Manchester City and Liverpool were quickly and emphatically out of the blocks with resounding 5-0 and 4-1 victories over West Ham and Norwich respectively.
The second round of EPL fixtures kicks off at 13:30 on Saturday when Arsenal host Burnely at the Emirates in London. However, the big match of the weekend is undoubtedly the epic clash between Manchester City (7/20) and Tottenham Hotspur (7/1). The defending champions are favoured to win at the Etihad Stadium with the draw currently being priced at 9/2.
There’s plenty of recent history between the clubs managed by former La Liga contemporaries Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino. The Citizens were 1-0 victors in both Premier League fixtures last season but Spurs got their own back when they famously knocked the Premier League Champions out of the Uefa Champions League on away goals. Another 1-0 win for City is priced at an attractive 8/1 while a reversal of the same scoreline comes in at whopping 20/1. Should it be another low scoring match an attractive market would be the Over/ Under for Total Goals: Over 2.5 – 1/2, Under 2.5 – 8/5.
Pep Guardiola’s team were in fine fettle in their season opener against the Hammers and remain title favourites at 11/25. Raheem Sterling was in sublime form in front of goal as he bagged the first hat-trick of the season. The England international can still be bought at 5/1 to finish as the leading marksman of the season while his England captain and Saturday’s opponent Harry Kane, who scored a brace against Aston Villa, is the bookies favourite to end with the Golden Boot at 7/2.
Both teams boast an embarrassment of riches when it comes to their attacking talent and we have a selection of markets that cater to their prowess in front of goal:
